Hi all,
My PC (an old Athlon 500Mhz) is getting really old and i'm looking to get
a brand new AMD64 (yes i'm an AMD guy ...).
So i'd just like to know if some of you out there have experiences,
issues, with such machines,
I have some experience about these, as we have two of them at the LGL
(running SuSE 9.2), my sister's laptop (SuSE 9.2) and my own (SuSE
9.3).
heard that the driver support is not very good
yet.
There is no issue with drivers as long as they are open
source. However, if you've got win-hardware, with closed-source
drivers, you'll have problems, as those will only be available as 32
bit objects in most cases (one notable happy exception: NVidia).
While you can run 32 bit application on top of a 64 bit kernel, the
same is not true about kernel modules which drivers are.
I ran into that problem while trying to set up the Winmodem and the 3D
ATI drivers on my sister's laptop.
As well as were here in Lxuembourg I can get such a
machine for a
good price. Thanks in advance.
The two LGL machine have been baught at Briga in Esch (Romain Gaasch's
shop), my sister's laptop is from lapxpress (
www.lapxpress.de) in
Germany, and my own has been bought used (but previous owner bought it
at Auchan (with Windows, alas!)).
Oh, yes one last thing I will probably install a
Gentoo or Ubuntu system,
so any more specific issues with these are welcome, too ;)
ciao,
pst
