A few days ago, I believe someone was speaking about Coditel's internet
services. For those who have it, what has been your experience with Coditel?
My primary concerns are 1) quality of the service (unexplained down time,
mail servers down, too many users on one shared segment...) and 22) does the
USB modem that they offer work with linux or would I have to go out and get
myself a nice little linksys or Cisco router?

service.
Once in a while they have short routing problems, but nothing major.
The only annoying thing is that all their traffic still goes through
Brussels ... and when I open my browser, I end up on google.be ... in
dutch !

The modem they provided me with is equiped with both USB and ethernet:

At work, we use their service (with fixed IP) for one of our customer
and a Netscreen firewall. Works fine as well.

must be dutch as default language setted somewhere.

Indeed there is a possibility to select prefered languages in a web
browser. However the problem here is not this one.
Google proposes also to set a cookie that contains your preferences
(click on preferencies on the main page).
The real problem here is indeed related to routing. By using a
belgian-issued range of IP addresses (and this be routed through
Belgium), the customers appears as being in Belgium as reported by it's
source IP address. Thus, Google proposes by default dutch as language,
even if french is spoken in two third of the country and that german is
also an official language in Belgium.

It would be fine if Google would support Luxembourgish. But please don't
blame Google for it!!! Our europhile governement didn't even manage to
established our UN (1984) recognised national language as a recognised
EU language, a right wich was attributed to ALL 10 new state members
(even Malta which is smaller than Luxembourg).
Besides, German is the only foreign language which is understood by ALL
native Luxemburger (wich cannot be said for French). Luxemburgers still
are all alphabetized in German und for the same reason every
luxemburgish policemen writes his reports in German. Look for
http://www.police.public.lu where some chosen police reports are
published by the Press department with only small modifications.
Compare the knowledge of the french language of a 7 year (or 80 year)
old luxemburgish citizen with her knowledge of the german language!!!
Besides, if you overlook the french words which we find in the
luxemburgish language, you will see that the fundamentals of the
luxemburgish language are quite similar to the german language. There is
no neutral, no accusative, no dative in the french language! This may
not help the average luxembourger to speak *correct* german (because too
much luxemburgishms are introduced in their German), but greatly helps
them to understand the language. Look at all the "Spillschoul" kids who
never learned German watching Sesamstraße & Co.
You can switch Google.lu to French, German is only the default.

Especially the older generations have *real* problems with French,
because the french language was not taught in Luxembourg during WWII.

So what? German is not only spoken by Germans, but also by people living
in Switzerland and Belgium (Eupen and St. Vith). Also never mind that
almost everywere in the world (even America) people will take you
immediately as a German when you open your mouth (Most foreign people
will not hear the difference between lux. and german if they are only
listening to the sound of the language and don't understand German or
Luxembourgish). So you will have to explain that the sound of your
language is not linked to the political conviction of your country
during WWII (Which will be the same for the swiss and belgian German
speakers and to some extend for the Netherlands).

What about English as the default language for google.lu and
German/French as an option, if translation to Luxembourgish is not
feasible? Most users of this list write in English for a good reason:
1. English is the language of the internet.
2. Luxembourg has over 7000 EU functionaries which aren't necessarly
speaking French. There are many foreign banks and I know that in
companies like SES, Good Year, Dupont, Husky, etc. English and not
French is the primary language. Here at Limpertsberg in the 4 appartment
house where I am living, in 2 appartments there are living swedish
people and in 1 appartment there are living british people.
Looking at Telecran, Revue and all the election material I got from all
the political parties which are all in German which only some "Slogans"
in Luxembourgish, it is *very* difficult to see why one should blame
Google for not having a "minimum" amount of political smartness.
Since we are not a minority but actors in our own sovereign country and
are able to choose the language we want (which unfortunately is often
not Luxembourgish), Google is completely right in choosing the same
language as almost all political parties choose to communicate to their
electors.

isn't customization one of the outstanding properties of linux that the
community is so proud of? so for the same reason that i personally
wouldn't bother much whether kde or gnome comes as default on my linux
distribution, i wouldn't care either about french or german being
default for google.lu, as long as one can customize it. besides,
computationally speaking, the differences between french and german are
so small that the same formalisms can be used to model both, so what? ;)

have nothing to complain about their service neither.

Not sure if that's going to help, maybe I'm completely off base...
but do you run "nscd" (name service cache daemon)? That one might
help with these problems - if it doesn't generate problems of it's
own (which I've also seen).
Also, in case you want to have fun with your internal network (that
is, if you're crazy enough to want to play with this), you may
consider to set up your own local DNS (I confess... I did so, even
at home). That should rid you of any DNS problems with Coditel.

That's annoying, however I fixed that by selecting the English language
link (i.e. google.com) and told Mozilla to keep this cookie :)

New subject: KDM startup problems
Can anyone give me some advice on how to begin debugging a KDM startup
problem?
Whenever I turn on my PC, it boots normally, starts X successfully, and then
TRIES to start KDM. It hangs just after it changes the curser to a watch,
but still leaving the ugly grey X background.
If I switch to another VTY, and change the run level to a non graphical level,
then change it back again, KDM works perfectly. Likewise, if I do a ps -A
and kill the first instance of kdm, it starts up without further problems.
After it has successfully started up, I never have any further problems with
it.
The only changes that I have made to the system is to install the debian
version of Grub. I am running SuSE 8.2, but have upgraded kde to 3.2.

Hi,
I have been using it since about February and I'll respond to the
questions in reverse order :)
2) you would probably have a choice of at least two modems (I did), one
was a USB only modem (not good) the other was an USB/Ethernet modem, I
chose that one, disregarded the USB and connected it to my ethernet
adapter... no driver, no problem, no hassle works like a breeze
1) QoS :
- in the past (almost) 5 month I have had 2 periods of real down-time,
lasted 1 night the first time, 1 day the second (both were in early
March)
- I also had a problem with them in the past 10 days (I was the one who
complained) when they suddenly decided to lock port 25 (SMTP) without
warning; no notice, no response. I called the helpline... no use as
usual (see below), I was lucky this time as they acknowledged the
existence of a problem, however no help available and they never got
back to me about this... [I found a solution or a workaround with Eric's
help]
- the helpline : forget it, most of the time they don't know what
they're talking about; they insisted on me reinstalling the windows
drivers for my modem and ethernet adapter and reconfiguring the IP; they
also insisted that I must be having problems with the latest windows
virus (which one was it in March?) -- even though I'd told them I was
using Linux. When I said I might use Linux or Windows they assumed I
have a router and were going to refuse to support me... I had to
painfully explain to them the concepts of dual-boot (they know "about"
Linux, but it's not in their checklists...)
Detail : I'm using what they used to refer to as Coditel.net which seems
to have been renamed into SpeedClick; this is 128k/1M with 10G per month
and dynamic IP all for 47EUR/month - I'm a private user, this is not for
professional use.
All in all it's way cheaper than ADSL (except if you got Thierry's
connections) and pretty reliable.
One point tho', in the past 3 days I seem to have noticed some
degradation in performance (speed and DNS response) in the early evening
(around 12-14h and 17-19h) but I need to investigate that to make sure
it is so and I don't often use the Net at noon.

with Linux, no download limit. They are available everywhere EPT is
available (they use EPT ADSL DSLAMs if you are our of their own coverage

Perfect for me. Installed several times for me, my company and
customers. No availability, filtering or performance problems so far. No
stupid help-desk answer so far. At least, they understand that you can
USE a Linux-based computer and they accept to support it. This is my
experience.
They are fully aware of GNU/Linux/FOSS issue. They use internally
StarOffice...

Coditel works very well. I use it since June 2003 with almost no

Coditel works very well. I use it since June 2003 with almost no

Ad 2: They gave me the USB/Ethernet cable modem; I only use the Ethernet
part. No trouble with this. Only an Ethernet card and DHCP required.
Ad 1: In the beginning I had some trouble with signal strength, thus I
did not have connection over hours every day. Calls to their Helpdesk
were adventourous:
Me : I have trouble with my connection . The "Cable-LED" is blinking
They: OK, go to Settings -> comntrol Panel etc.
Me: I use Linux, but the OS is not the problem, the "Cable LED" is
blinking.
They: Please reboot your system.
Me: That's impossible
They: Why would this be impossible?
Me: Because it is not started ;-))
They: So how can you tell you have trouble, if you have not even started
your PC?
Me: Because it's not worth starting it, as the "Cable LED" is blinking.
They: Oh, the Cable LED is blinking! That means, there is a problem on
our side
Me: That's why I call you.
They: Unfortunately, the technicians who can troubleshoot this only work
until 5PM. Try calling tomorrow morning
etc.
These troubles lasted pretty long, then they fiddled around on their
amplifiers, and things went better, but not perfect.
My connection is perfect since some NIMBY-minded neighbour forced
Coditel to take away their cables from the facade of his house, as he
didn't want cable TV any more, and they had to completely change their
cabling in the neighbourhood ...
