In the end, it indeed turned out to be a misunderstanding of BIOS
settings by the user (I only relayed info ;-)):
apparently there's a setting that will disable WiFi as soon as the
FastEthernet interface is active, the user found out about it as
things didn't work in the Evil OS (tm) either (dual-boot).
Since he changed settings, the button does indeed work, and he
can connect to the internal WLAN network.
