Hi,
I am currently evaluating VMWare workstation 4.5.2 running on Slackware
10 as a host, and Windows XP as a guest. I am impressed how smooth
everything ran up to now, and seriously consider buying this piece of
software.
Has anybody got some experience with this? Maybe on a 2.6 kernel, other
Linux host distros, other guest OSes?
Also, the price tag is quite high - 189$. Do you know of any reseller
who offers the same at a lower price?

I used VMWare on RedHat and SuSE up to and including to kernel 2.4. The
product is indeed very well working, and indeed quite expensive. Since
then, I just switched completely to Linux native applications, so I
don't use any Microsoft product since years. No recent experience from
me so.
I might consider using it again to test interoperability between Samba
3.0 and Active Directory without having to purchase a dedicated
computer... But 189 USD is close to a dedicated computer... (you have to
pay for the licence in both cases...)

I sure want to use it for Windows, like running my specific Palm apps
which only have a Windows conduit or the like. But I also want to use it
to test other Linux or BSD "distros", the upcoming Slackware release, or
whatever.

IMO the main advantage is that it's quicker (to start and switch) than a
dedicated computer, no hassle with hardware drivers, and, disk
permitting, you can have several configs in parallel.
And... my girlfriend will not kill me for having several VMs, but
certainly for buying a few new computers ;-)

I'm using it on SuSE 9.1, with a 2.6.5 kernel, and it runs fine (apart
from being very memory hungry...)

Some month ago I tried it out on my Centrino 1.4 GHz job-laptop. XP was
the host and I installed various OS as guest, some Linux, and also NT4,
and I liked it very much. Perceived performance was about 90% as if
running natively.
Then I installed it at home on an AthlonXP2200 running debian unstable,
on a 2.4 kernel, and got deeply disappointed... Performance was about
5-10 times (if not more) worse than what I experienced on windoze :-(
I have never tried it again since then, but certainly will do so once
again.
However I tried out QEMU on Linux, and this rocks! Performance felt much
much better, nearly as good as VMWare running on windowse, and best is
that it runs in userspace, and it's open-source:
