In the AP, they use Atmel. No idea what they use in their cards.

Yes, exchange the card for something better supported, if you still
have that option (I don't).
I do (the card is just borrowed). However, the other card I tried
didn't work any better (a Level One Realtek 8180):
- Worked fine with old SuSE (8.2, if I remember correctly)
- No longer works with 9.0 (can not enable card, crashes the kernel
frequently)
I also had once a card from BenQ: worked fine softwarewise, but
overheated after a longer period of use (> 1h30), so I had to exchange
it.
