Googling for "photo recovery" gives plenty results for software
that rescues photos from damaged memory cards. You might want to
investigate whether any of that software can handle ext3, or if
any of it is filesystem-agnostic.
Searching on freshmeat.net for "recovery" yields this page, which
has a perl script for jpg extraction and links to other software
for the same task:
