Hi. I have a Coditel cable connection to a Coditel
cable modem. (With
reference to recent discussions about various ADSL deals available in
Luxembourg, I am happy to vouch for the cable service offered by Coditel if
it's available in your area - recently they doubled the connection speed at
no extra cost.)
Well, most ADSL providers did triple, even quadriple (not sure a bout
spelling) their bandwith, so I'm also very happy ;)
At the moment my computer is plugged into the cable modem via RJ45. I am
moving house soon and would like to have the computer upstairs in the new
place. The cable, however, comes into the downstairs front room. I would
like to canvas the group's opinion on the most appropriate hardware to set
up a wireless connection under Linux, including recommendations on hardware
and where to buy it. My machine is a Dell Dimension 4600 with a Pentium IV,
running Debian GNU/Linux (sarge, mostly). There's only one machine at home
at the moment, but I want to get a lap-top in the next six months or so.
Debian is very nice :)
Ok so you want an wifi acces point, connected to the cable modem, and of
course need a wifi-card in your PC or laptop to get Internet access.
On the AP side there generally is no problem, cause they are idenpendant of
your computer and as such also of your system. Mos of them also come with a
web-based configuration tool, so all you need is a browser.
On the other hand, for the wifi-card you have to plug into your laptop, the
problems begin, a lot of them have poor suport on Linux and some even doesn't
work at all. So before getting such a card, you should really perform some
googling to get info about the support status if it. For your laptop I would
suggest to get one of those centrino ones, the wifi support is rather good
now (I'm writing this mail on a centrino laptop connect via its integrated
wifi card to my acess point (a netgear) ;)
Additionally, although I am reasonably competent, I am
not a tech pro, and
I have a limited budget, so no Grand Unifying Solutions please!
On the budgt ide you should count with something around ~150€ for the AP and
another ~60€ for the card. However there often are bundels were you get the
AP and the card for ~170€.
Thanks in advance,
