For usb you can find the specs for the mass storage class here:
http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs
I hope you like to read standards :-)
They certainly have reserved enough bits in the protocol to allow for
huge LBA-numbers. Maybe the commands are even transported transparently,
so the adressable size would only depend on the driver software.
Don't know much about it though, just my 5 cents.

  Hi,
I'm looking into buying an external hard drive enclosure with
USB2 & firewire ports, for fitting with an IDE or SATA 3.5" drive.
I've been doing some research, but I've nowhere found information
on the maximum capacity these things support - I imagine the
IDE-to-USB-or-Firewire bridge would be subject to the same sort
of limitations we've seen over the years with the PC BIOS.
Can anyone point me to more info?
 TIA, Eric
