What about Sarge? Isn't that rather up-to-date?
So, basically, I guess what I am asking is 1) how
difficult is it to manage a
slackware based system? 2) are upgrades a problem? 3) how quickly does
slackware upgrade its software?
I find it easy, but it's because it fits my mind. I have written some
stuff you might be interested in:

Upgrades for stable are about every 6-9 months, though the last one was
slower due to Pat's illness. Have a look at
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=slackware and look at the
release dates and the package versions you are interested in. You should
get the picture.
In a nutshell, it requires some work, but it is very stable. If you are
only interested in the stable version, serious work is only required
every 6-9 months.
BTW, there's also a current version for the brave.
