It's obvious you'll find good advises here. You're currently writing on
a linux user group list :-)
There are many ways to meet Linux, called distros. You may try the
"Kubuntu" release which appears to be beginners friendly.
Moreover, you can try a live cdrom without installing anything. You can
try the live version of kubuntu or Knoppix.

In a nutshell : try knoppix then Kubuntu. Many websites deal with the
beginner strategy. Follow the guide.
