Yup, seen the /. article - I only seriously doubt that this is
done by Intel themselves, i.e. even if it's an Intel employee
that's writing this, doesn't mean the company is behind it.
The guy has no doc to go from, nothing - that's definitely not
what I'd expect from an officially supported driver.
As for the SlashDot writeup, it wouldn't (by far) be the first
time that it is not entirely accurate (put nicely).
To me, this looks much more like what happened with the TI
ACX 100 chipset - people got fed up with the lack of Linux
(or *BSD or whatever) driver, and started up a project for
themselves, not waiting for anything from the manufacturer.
