With the help of Alain, I finally get it to work. The thing is that the
parameters -p cp437 AND -y utf8 have to be used at the same time for
ncpmount.

Under SuSE 10.1, I mount the volume using the code page 437 (parameter
-p cp437). All works fine. Regional used letters such as é,à,è are
correctly used, volume names have these letters.
In Kubuntu Dapper, this doesn't work. The same names do not have the
regional letters. Instead, they are replaced by ? or other signs.
What have I to do to use these letters (codepage) also in Kubuntu?

Hi,
what with Google Earth out for GNU/Linux, I wanted to give it a decent
try using the proprietary NVidia graphics driver instead of the free "nv"
driver.
After a round of updates, I have my system now on Debian testing, kernel
2.6.16.18 (self-baked), xorg 7.0 (man, that did cost some time to even
get there with the nv driver - the box was originally installed with Debian
stable several years ago and has seen many upgrades and dist-upgrades),
kde 3.5.2
I found out that for the proprietary driver, I needed to specify the
modules path to the installer:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/
I also found that having the "nvidia-glx" and "nvidia-kernel" scripts in
/etc/init.d was less than optimal after a reboot - they totally messed up
the proprietary driver => reinstall (of the driver).
Now, with the nvidia module specified in xorg.conf, when starting X11 I do
get the NVidia logo - ok so far.
If I run a gnome session, things work out.
But, if I run my usual KDE session, or simply kdm, X11 does start up, draws
a few things to the screen (say, most of the kdm window, or in the case of
the kde session, it does get up to "restoring session"), and then freezes.
The mouse pointer still moves, but no keyboard input is accepted, nothing
else is drawn to the screen.
If I then login via ssh I can kill X11, but do not get back control over
the console -> I have to reboot after all.
I did try using a totally fresh account with no config files whatsoever
around (system defaults only), same effect.
Does anyone have an idea what might cause this behavior, and how to fix
it? Pointers to TFM are welcome, as long as they are precise enough ;-)

I'm working for a big client in France who uses a windows2K network and also HP-UNIX servers, communication between machines is done by VNC; now I'd like to work with cygwin to obtain acess on UNIX machines; I've no problem to start the emulator but can't start the graphical server (using startx command; it should be possible -depending of parametrisation- to launch kde, gnome or xwindows); actually, I'm on two possibility which can be source of problem:
-X11 packages have not been correctly installed (maybe beause a font is not correctly intalled?)
-there is a conflict with VNC on a certain port (this should be because VNC has been installed BEFORE CygWin but I'm not sure).
When invoking startx, I receive folowing error message in calling shell:

In the documentation, it is said the input file must be on g3 format, created by pbm2g3 from bitmat one (if I correctly understood) but how to convert openoffice format to bitmap?

Suse has integrated a great thing in firefox: You have bookmarks of their
pages directly integrated in the browser. Nothing new, but great is the
thing you have a button 'Open in tabs'. When you click on it, all link
will be opened in a different tab. Very useful.
How can I do it for bookmarks that I will open in different tabs (the same
way) in one time, so that I don't need to open a tab and choose everytime
the bookmark!

Thanks for the link. Buying directly from ibm/lenovo or from a reseller
doesn't really matter, as long as windooze is not included.
But it looks like xtops just sells you a standard thinkpad, with linux
preinstalled, but still with the m$-tax included as well.
So not the right thing for me :-)
