Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a thinkpad, and was wondering how I may buy one
without any m$ product preloaded or included ?
I tried to contact lenovo Belgium, but without much success.
Thanks for any hints/tips :-)

Hello,
I'm using actually KdePrintFax configirated with sendfax/mgetty-sendfax but I'm unable to send a fax with this system; what file format is supportad by sendfax?
In the documentation, it is said the input file must be on g3 format, created by pbm2g3 from bitmat one (if I correctly understood) but how to convert openoffice format to bitmap?
Thank you in advance for any suggestion
cheers

I haven't read that one, but read some stuff on brent's website regarding this
topic.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the link. Buying directly from ibm/lenovo or from a reseller
doesn't really matter, as long as windooze is not included.
But it looks like xtops just sells you a standard thinkpad, with linux
preinstalled, but still with the m$-tax included as well.
So not the right thing for me :-)

I guess it isn't possible to get the money for the license back from m$
neither ?

as user, the command gives as answer:
No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
As root, the command gives no answer at all.

There is no file dll.conf in kubuntu. There is only a dll.conf.dpkg-dist.
I always have written it in (hpaio), restarted hplip, but it doesn't work.

HI
I use a HP PSC1210 Printer with scanner. Under SuSE, the Printer and Scanner
works fine, but under kubuntu, the scanner doesn't work. I don't know how to
make it run since i use hplip.
oes someone know how to configure it? I watched that under SuSE it issomething
completely different that in Kubuntu (debian).
Thank you
Al
Hi
I'm looking for a program to chat with video and voIP, like msn
mesenger for windows. I already installed amsn, that works fine,
videoconferencing works, but no voIP. (and MS of course :-( )
I tried wqengophone, but thed client always crashed.
Is there anybody out there ( c by Pink Floyd) who knows a program that
fulfills these needs and just works?
Thanx
Al

Hi,
Recently I installed Ogle video player on Suse10.0, and once done, Ogle failed to start, printing several messages, I remember on previous installations that it is due to the file /etc/fstab which is incomplete; initial content is:
/dev/hda4 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/hda2 /boot ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
/dev/cdrecorder /media/cdrecorder subfs noauto,fs=cdfss,ro,procuid,nosuid,nodev,exec,iocharset=utf8 0 0
/dev/hda1 /windows/C ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0
~
(assuming /dev/hda1 is used for windows partition);but it lacks something for the cdrom which should be mounted on /mnt/cdrom; I suppose this is why dvd cannot be read.
Unfortunately I modified this file, adding wrong parameters and since this time I cannot open any session on KDE or GNOME: when entering user name and passwd on KDE I have the messages: 'could not start kstartupconfig' and after I have 'could not start kdeinit'.
Anybody knows how to add an entry in the file fstab?
Thank you in advance for suggestions

Hi,
First i see that "/home" is not mapped to any partition. So "/home" is a
subtree of your root partition.
May it be that there is not enough space on the root partition for
user's ".*" data when logging in?
May it be that "/home" was originally mapped to it's own partition, and
that partition is broken for some reason? See if there is a "/home"
mapping in "/etc/fstab" and see in your system logfiles what happens at
boot.
Log in in console-mode as "root" and then do "su - <username>". Now you
should be in the login directory of one of your users. See if this
directory exists and seems "normal". Check user and group ownership,
check "user, group, other" permissions. User must have "rwx" on the
directory "/home/<username>" and on most content in it!
