Hi Since SuSE 8.2, I have trouble with the IDE drivers. If the kernel tries to reach the drives, I got a message: kernel: hdd: packet command error: error =0x51 {Drive Ready SeekComplete Error) kernel:hdd: packet command error: error = 0x54 After a few messages, the drive mounts, but there are still new generated messages. I use SuSE 9.1, kernel 2.6.5-7.95-default, hdd=HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4081B But it is not Drive specific. If I mount /dev/hdc, I got the same error messages for hdc! That slowss down the system! Any idea? Thanx. Al

There is also some "sysprep" utility to use on the "master" before cloning an MS Windows machine, which allows to remove such specifics - no idea though how this gets (re)set after cloning - I guess it's a case for RTFM'ing ;-) Greets & hth, Eric

A windows question: joining XP to a samba 3.0 domain

[Sorry to ask a Windows question on the list...] This weekend we upgraded the Linuxstuff to newer versions of the Software (new Windows XP on the client, new SuSE 9.1 on client and server). SuSE 9.1 has samba 3.0 whereas 8.2, that we used before, had samba 2.0. All went fine until the very end. After cloning our newly set up client to the 9 others we noticed that we could no longer join the domain: Whenever we tried to join the domain we got the following error: "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again" However, no shares were mapped when this message was displayed (we checked by looking at "My Computer" at client, and also by doing a smbstatus on the server... Or could there be hidden "connections" that show up at different places?) Multiple reboots didn't help either. Changing the domain name on the server didn't help (INTERNETSTUFFEN). First putting the clients into a workgroup with the same name (INTERNETSTUFFEN) before joining the domain didn't help either. We had kept one of the old clients as a "backup" on the XP version from last summer, and that client could still leave and join the domain without any problems whatsoever. Has anybody come accross a similar problem, and found a solution? Thanks, Alain

guide to compiling, "autostart" dockapps

compiling: does anyone know about a good guide on how to compile from source? problems i have: - what programs and libs are considered to be standard, so they are not mentioned in any install instructions? (default suse doesn't even have gcc installed) - how to tell if a problem is a missing package/distribution specific/broken code/wrong compiler version/ ..., so you know where to ask for help? dockapps: i'm trying fluxbox, and i quite like it because it's easy to configure. now i would like to start some dockapps when fluxbox starts. i read in an faq that you need to put them in your .xinitrc, after starting the windowmanager. i wonder if this applies for suse, as there is a graphical login, where you can chose your windowmanager. so there would have to be a different .xinitrc for each windowmanager? i'm clueless... if someone knows what to do, or where i could read about how suse handles such things, i'd be grateful. kymon

I use Openoffice 1.1.1 and have trouble printing to envelopes. (on a psc1210 with hpijs 1.6.1 and hpoj 0.91 on SuSE 9.1) The printer always forwards the envelope too far, so it cannot print on it. It's something like the paper size is too big. If I change it to C6 in the printer settings in OO, the problem is still there. Is that a bug in OO 1.1.1 or do I make something wrong? Al

Novell/Ximian Evolution & sending mail

Hi there, Using Ximian Evolution 1.4.4, when I write mails (using Ximian) it usually sends them right away as soon as I hit the "finish/send" button (I'm using IP-over-cable). I'd like to keep the messages in the "Outbox" for a few minutes before they're sent, so I have a chance to change my mind or review the messages. Does anyone know if this is possible? WLAN range problems

Hi everyone, currently I'm replacing my old 10Base2 ethernet at home with a 802.11g WLAN. I'm running into some range problems. The hardware is the following: Allnet 0271 PCI cards (supported by stock 2.6 kernel, yay) SMC 2802W.V2 PCI cards (supported by ndiswrapper only, shame) Linksys WRT54GS Router (nicely hackable) The trouble is that the PCI cards are unable to connect wirelessly, even though the distance is less than 10 meters. There are 2 walls inbetween the PCs. The house was built in 1974, and I'm not sure if any steel-reinforced concrete has been used. Some experiments have shown that as long as there is an approximate line of sight between any of the components, things will work somewhat, although the range is still bad ( > 50% packet loss at less than 10 meters distance). Curiously, a Centrino-based laptop (802.11b) gets "great" range (> 20 meters). I've tried forcing the whole WLAN to 802.11b, but that doesn't seem to help the PCI cards. I've tried changing channels, toggling encryption, etc, but nothing helped. Does anyone know if replacing the antennas on the PCI cards might help? Has anyone tried some? There are also active antennas (http://www.lirr.net/BA24.htm for example), which might work well, but they are a bit pricy (119 USD for this model). Or should I try to send the cards back and get a replacement? Any help is greatly appreciated, Christian Glodt

kmenuedit

Hi Using SuSE 9.1, I have trouble using kmenuedit: I add an entry (item), save all, and then start via the k-menu. The entry appears correctly. Then I try to edit it again via kmenuedit: The entry has disappeared. I have always made an update via YOU of the kdelibs3, but that doesn't change anything. I googled around, but no real answer. So I ask here: Where are these menuentries stored, how can I fix this problem or how to go around? Thanx Al
