Hi guys,
does anyone here on the list have experience with Linux on Alpha?
If so, do you have experience with Debian GNU/Linux on Alpha?
I've got some troubles here with SRM-only AlphaServers, getting
the system to even boot one of these boot images (hangs at
"jumping to bootstrap code", doesn't even get to the bootloader).
TIA, Eric
Hi,
I have a (possibly stupid) question about DNS and bind.
Let's suppose I have a network with DMZ, with external and internal
DNS servers, with different definitions for my domain in both (MX
is different when seen from outside than from inside, more stuff
on the inside, both configured as masters).
Now, for whatever reason, my internal servers are slower to
resolve external addresses than the external ones, and I'd like
to use those as forwarders, for stuff other than my own domain
(and subdomains), instead of going directly to the root servers.
When I try to go through the "forward first" option, it seems
that *all* requests go to the external DNS servers, which is
definitely not wanted - I want the internal servers to continue
serving requests for my own domain or subdomains.
I didn't as yet find the correct way to implement this (maybe
still not enough coffee or I didn't hit upon the right manual/
howto/whatever - checked google, ISC, tldp, ...).
Could someone point me the right way, if it's doable at all?
TIA, Eric
OK, so I'm paranoid...
I checked my own computer with nmap and got the following result:
Interesting ports on $MYHOST ($MYIPADDRESS):
(The 1641 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
Port State Service
22/tcp open ssh
111/tcp open sunrpc
6000/tcp open X11
Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.612 seconds
Now some more details; I was running nmap in user mode, not as root, I
know the result would be different, for the time being I'll work with
this, I'll check more later.
About the results :
I'm a bit surprised that ssh is opened, I don't remember setting up any
sshd daemon, however, I remember Brent doing something on my machine
during the Linuxdays, so it's not entirely impossible, I will disable it
for the time being.
I'm a bot more worried about the other two. I don't see what I might be
doing with Sun's RPC and wish to disable this (any hint welcome).
The same is true about X11; could anyone tell me why X11 is opening a
port on my machine, I don't intend to have anyone connect via X11 to my
host.
I expect I may have to toy with inetd and other startup scripts in order
to disable the nasty services/daemons. I hope I won't screw up my
system too much or too fast.
About ssh, is there a way how I can set up some identification so that
only specific remote users or users from specific hosts may connect to
my system through ssh? Would "anyone" be able to connect (assuming s/he
knows a username & password on my system)?
thanks
Serge

A friend of mine is using a Siemens Scanpen that has been commercialised
in Germany and Austria. You can buy it on the Internet as second-hand.
Here is the Linux software for it.
You can contact tmattart(a)belgacom.net for details.

I have users with large mailboxes (/var/spool/mail/$LOGIN).
They need a forward (/home/$LOGIN/.forward)
How can I re-process the stored e-mail such a way that it is forwarded
to their new e-mail address ?
I did it already with sendmail or procmail but I don't find out how
anymore.
Thank you.

I need my eth0 IP address in a shell variable.
I don't see an easy solution.
Anybody's idea ?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm using Evolution 1.4.4 under Linux (SuSE 9) usually under KDE.
When I select an e-mail to open and read it, the window usually is
opened in some fare corner of the screen and is of a ridiculous size. I
keep resizing the window and then when I open the next e-mail,
everything starts again.
When I'm writing an e-mail and I select a word to check spelling and see
spelling suggestions I have the same problem.
I'm not certain that it is something in Evolution, it might be an
unknown setting of SuSE Linux, bit it is really anoying.
Anyone knows a solution?
Serge

Hi,
praise the Lord, sendar is back online :-)
1st question: the next meeting is next week, january 22nd.
Is it going to be at the LGL?
2nd question: can someone (ok Alain, I've got your answer ;-))
recommend a good IMAP GUI client (so no, I won't take fetchmail
or retchmail for an answer) for use on Debian woody, on a rather
weakish hardware (fluxbox environment)?
The server is Lotus Domino (Notes), it's about my work mailbox
(which is huge). No, I don't want the Lotus Notes Client either,
even if it runs on wine ;-) and I certainly don't want a web-based
client (which I've got anyway). A textmode-client might be acceptable,
though, and could actually really be useful, as long as I can connect
to that external server (i.e. no download to /var/spool/mail/).
I've got unexpected (and unusual) problems with Mozilla Mail: my
old install wouldn't start up the Mail part any more (browser still
came up fine), after a new installation (from .tar.gz, after cleaning
everything up incl. ~/.mozilla/), Mozilla Mail came up but it doesn't
show me all my folders - but will tell me there's already such a
folder when I try re-creating one of the existing ones).
I tried balsa, it was anything but stable, gave me errors all of
the time. Also, it seemed to lack a search function.
I tried Sylpheed, which seems to be more or less functional, but
still feels sort of weird by moments (when I hit "get", all messages
disappear from my screen until I restart the application).
The general feel of Mozilla Mail is definitely nicer (when it works).
I don't want to install kmail, as that would imply installing the
Qt libs and what goes with them, and that would imply some dependency
problems (guess I shouldn't have installed certain backports).
Installing a different distro is out of the question, that will
only change (to Debian testing or unstable) when I get another
machine to work with, in several weeks' time.
What else is out there, what have you tried or are you using?
Greetings and thanks,
Eric
